Personal safety awareness and why it’s important

Personal risk management

We discuss the need to be aware of our own personal safety and for those who we have a duty of care.

Personal safety is, for everyone, a fundamental right and need. While it is one we can take for granted if not in a dangerous or hostile situation, growing cases of domestic, workplace and community violence are bringing into question our basic right to be safe at home, at work and within the community.

With awareness of the issue on the rise, individuals and organisations are now required to consciously consider the personal safety of themselves and those to whom they have a duty of care.

We invite you to reflect on these questions for a moment:

  1. Are you responsible for a team who deals with challenging or aggressive clients?
  2. Have you been involved in an incident with an aggressive client or person?
  3. Does your team deal with the public in a customer service role?
  4. Have you ever felt unsafe or uneasy while going about your daily life?
  5. Do you want to know how to better manage a situation involving an aggressive client or person?

Our purpose is to make people safe.

We draw on our experience with general and specialist policing fields, corporate security, my network, as well as our devotion to studying our craft, to assist people and organisations with their security needs.

In our line of work, we’ve noticed a definite and growing need for personal safety training.

At Vanguard Risk, we have evolved our personal safety awareness training over a number of years, with the sessions focusing on how you can manage and extract yourself from threatening situations before reaching a physical confrontation. While methods of self-defense can be effective, unless the individual trains in the discipline regularly and has done so for a considerable time, often the techniques will be lost in moments of stress and panic.

The purpose of our sessions is to increase awareness regarding personal safety, and teach basic, retainable principles that can be incorporated into everyday life, in addition to situations involving an aggressive or threatening client / person.

We have a proud history of providing this training to banking staff, retail staff, domestic violence victims, doctors and youth care workers. All sessions are developed according to the context of your individual situation, while integrating with your internal policies and procedures.

Managing Risk in Retail: What we’ve learned about Enhancing Safety and Security in Australia’s Crowded Shopping Centres in 2024

Shopping centres have long been integral to Australian life, serving as bustling hubs for shopping, dining, and socialising. However, recent violent incidents and the increasing abuse directed at workers have made 2024 another critical year for reassessing safety, security, and risk management strategies—particularly in crowded places like shopping centres.
