How does the change to Australia’s terrorism threat level impact venues and event operators of crowded places?

In August, the Australian government, lifted the national terrorism threat level from “possible” to “probable”. This change indicates the risk of a terror attack is greater than 50% in the next 12 months. This change is due to the increase in more Australians “embracing extremist ideologies” and an increased risk of ideological terrorism and politically motivated violence.

This is particularly relevant to venue operators, as globally, venues that attract large groups of people known as crowded places, such as sporting venues, exhibition centres and shopping centres, are recognised as the most likely and desirable places for a terrorist attack to occur.

Unsurprisingly, this serves as a strong reminder for all venue operators to audit what is in place currently and what needs to be revisited.

But what proactive measures should your venue be undertaking?

Risk Management consultancy, Vanguard Risk, is a strategic partner for many venues proactively auditing and enhancing their preparedness against terrorist threats in light of this change.

This includes:

  • Engaging with all department heads to discuss the implications of the threat change for their site, teams and visitors
  • Educating key personnel on crisis management to better prepare them for the most likely scenarios
  • Conducting risk & vulnerability assessments, including identifying key calendar dates when their site might be a high-risk target
  • Assessing security personnel, technical security systems and physical measures
  • Developing comprehensive security governance underpinned by well-defined policies and procedures
  • Enhancing Emergency & Crisis Management Plans
  • Conducting training, exercises & system testing while evaluating resourcing plans and organisational structures.

Effective preparation is essential to keeping your venue, staff and visitors safe, in addition to ensuring a considered approach is taken to avoid the implementation of costly and ineffective measures.
